
D1 Max vs D1 MaxPro: what the LiDAR line count actually resolves
Line count is the number that gets quoted first, and it is the wrong number to buy on by itself. The D1 Max carries two 192-line LiDAR units. The D1 MaxPro carries one 96-line unit. Read as a spec-sheet contest that is a four-to-one advantage for the D1 Max. Read as a mapping problem it is a question about coverage and redundancy, not resolution per se, and the two platforms answer different questions.

- Two units mounted on the same body cover more of the space around the robot at once, and where their fields overlap the returns can be checked against each other. That matters most exactly where a single sensor struggles: a doorway approached at an angle, a shelf edge close to the body, a moment where one unit's view is briefly blocked by the robot's own leg. The published range for the D1 Max is explicitly a 120 m diameter; the D1 MaxPro's own 120 m figure does not say whether it is measured the same way, so the two are not directly comparable on distance. What the dual unit clearly buys is angle and overlap.

- The D1 MaxPro publishes a rated accuracy of 1.5 cm at a 120 m range, and it publishes that figure precisely because it is the one that matters for the machines this platform targets: repeatable path following and fine obstacle clearance rather than dense simultaneous coverage from two vantage points. A single well characterised sensor with a documented accuracy figure is not a lesser part, it is a different design choice, and it is the one the catalogue chose to quantify.
- The absence worth naming.
- The catalogue does not publish an accuracy figure for the D1 Max's dual-LiDAR configuration, and it does not publish a point density or an angular resolution for either machine, in lines per degree or points per second, which is what would let you compare the two on the same axis. Line count alone tells you how many scan planes a unit sweeps, not how finely it distinguishes two objects close together, and not how the two units on the D1 Max are fused into one map. Where a manufacturer publishes a headline number and stays silent on the number that would make it comparable, treat the headline as marketing shorthand, not a spec.
- What this means for a buying decision.
- If your task is dense obstacle avoidance in a cluttered, changing space, angular coverage and redundancy matter more than a single accuracy figure, and the D1 Max's dual sensor is the more defensible starting point even without a published accuracy number for the pair. If your task is repeatable navigation along a defined route with known clearances, a rated 1.5 cm accuracy at range is the more useful number, and it is the one the D1 MaxPro gives you. - For a genuine comparison you need the point density or angular resolution figure, not the line count, and you need to know whether the D1 Max's two units are fused into a single accuracy-rated map or reported separately. If a supplier cannot answer that, the four-to-one line count is not telling you what you think it is telling you.
