
IP40 or IP67 on an end effector: what each rating actually survives
An IP rating on an end effector reads like a checkbox next to the platform's own rating, and the two AGIBOT pickers show why it deserves its own separate check.
- The Swift Picker is rated IP40; the Titan Picker is rated IP67, and the gap between those two numbers is the difference between a clean bench and a washdown line.
- IP40 protects against solid objects but offers no protection from water at all, which is fine on a dry indoor bench and a genuine gap on any cell that gets hosed down, splashed, or simply runs somewhere dusty and outdoors. IP67 survives full submersion to a metre for thirty minutes, which is the rating a washdown or outdoor cell actually needs regardless of what rating the platform carrying it holds.
- Cycle time trades against that ingress protection, and the numbers show the trade directly.
- The Swift Picker opens or closes in 0.25 seconds; the Titan Picker takes 0.75. A cell built around fast, light picking loses half a second of cycle time per grip by choosing the sealed gripper over the fast one, which matters on a line counted in seconds per part and matters less on a line where washdown compliance is the actual constraint.
- Gripper height and stroke decide fit before either of the other two figures matters.
- The Titan Picker's 134.5 mm gripper height and 50 mm stroke against the Swift Picker's 90 mm stroke describe two physically different tools, not two settings on the same one, and a part or a cell geometry that only fits one of those envelopes settles the choice before ingress protection or cycle time are even compared.
Reading the IP rating off the platform's own spec sheet and assuming it covers the end effector too is the mistake this pair makes visible: the gripper is a separate part with its own rating, and a washdown cell needs to check it separately rather than inherit an assumption from the robot above it.
