
Robot density in Europe, and what the number cannot tell you
The International Federation of Robotics published its World Robotics 2025 density figures on 8 April 2026, and one line travels further than the rest: the EU-27 operates 231 industrial robots per 10,000 manufacturing employees, against a global average of 132. Western Europe on its own is 267, North America 204 and Asia 131, all for 2024. They are real numbers from a source anyone can open, and they are easy to use badly. Robot density is the operational stock of industrial robots divided by the number of people employed in manufacturing, scaled to 10,000: two quantities, both moving, and only one of them about robots. Almost every misreading comes from forgetting that the denominator exists, which is easy because the headline is always written as though the number counted machines.
- It moves when employment moves, not only when robots do.
- A country that closes plants and sheds manufacturing jobs watches its density rise without anyone installing anything, because the same stock of machines is divided among fewer people. A country that opens a labour-intensive factory watches its density fall in the year it does so, while owning more robots than it did before. A rising density is therefore not by itself evidence of investment, and a falling one is not by itself evidence of neglect. The ratio and the automation can move in opposite directions for years at a time, and nothing in the published figure separates them.
- What it cannot tell you about your own line.
- The figure is a national or regional aggregate across every manufacturing sector at once, so an economy with a large automotive industry carries a high density whether or not anything else in it has automated. Germany at 449 and Slovenia at 315 are both well above the EU-27 average, and neither number says anything about a specific plant in either country. Asia's regional figure is 131, a whisker under the global 132, and that same region contains the highest national densities the release publishes. Averaging across a continent is what does that. Robot density is a macroeconomic indicator, published once a year, describing a stock that took decades to accumulate. It is not a benchmark a factory can be measured against, and treating it as one produces the worst version of this conversation: buying a machine because a country score looks low rather than because a task needs one.
- South-east Europe is not in the release, and that is worth saying plainly.
- The IFR names Slovenia and no other central or eastern European country. Bulgaria, Romania, Greece and Cyprus do not appear in it at all. This site has not established whether that is because their density is low, because they sit outside the roughly twenty national markets the IFR reports individually, or both, so there is no figure for those four markets here and there will not be one until a primary source publishes it. An aggregator site will supply one on request. A number with no primary source behind it is worse than no number, because once it is written down it gets quoted.
- The number that decides an installation is the task, not the country.
- What actually settles whether a robot earns its place is measurable on one line in one building: how long the cycle takes now, how repeatable today's result is, how the parts arrive and in what orientation, and how many hours a week the operation really runs. Those four are specific to a plant, they can be measured in a week, and none of them changes when a national statistic is republished in April. A proof of concept on your own floor answers the question the density figure only appears to answer.
Read the density numbers as what they are: a description of where robots already are, aggregated across a whole economy and lagging the present by more than a year. They are genuinely useful for understanding the market you buy in, the supply of engineers who have worked with these machines, and how long a spare takes to arrive. They are not an argument for or against automating one specific task, and the task is the only thing that can settle that.
